KSrelief And Gates Foundation Collaborate On Workshop For Global Polio Eradication

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation conducted a workshop on polio eradication on August 27-28. Held at KSrelief's headquarters in Riyadh, the event was organized in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, focusing on global efforts to eliminate polio.

The workshop saw participation from senior representatives of international organizations, health agencies, and government bodies. Notable attendees included Dr. Chris Elias, Chair of the Polio Oversight Board; Andrea Thompson, Senior Program Officer for Polio Outbreaks at the Gates Foundation; Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean; and Adele Khodr, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Workshop Aims at Polio-Free World

Dr. Ziad Memish, KSrelief's senior advisor to the supervisor-general for medical and humanitarian research, emphasized strengthening ties between KSrelief and the Gates Foundation. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to eradicate polio. "Working together, I have no doubt that we can achieve a polio-free world," Memish said.

The agenda included sessions on polio epidemiology, GPEI governance structures, and strategies to overcome remaining barriers to eradication. On the second day, discussions centered on developing a framework to support the initiative. Participants explored potential program approaches, resource allocation, and oversight mechanisms.

Elias expressed gratitude towards Saudi Arabia for its leadership in polio eradication efforts and thanked KSrelief for hosting the workshop. "We appreciate Saudi Arabia’s leadership in polio eradication and are excited to be able to contribute to this polio learning session," said Elias.

Saudi Arabia's Commitment

Saudi Arabia has been a long-standing supporter of global polio eradication efforts. The Kingdom has backed 15 projects worth approximately US$40 million, providing essential vaccination services worldwide.

Participants were given insights into GPEI’s strategies, progress made so far, and actionable steps for ensuring global eradication success. This collaboration underscores the importance of partnerships in tackling global health challenges like polio.

The workshop marked a significant moment in reaffirming global partners' commitment to eradicating polio. Such events highlight how collective efforts can lead to a world free from this debilitating disease.

"How soon that happens will depend on many factors: supporting fragile health systems; overcoming vaccine hesitancy; encouraging an end to conflicts that interfere with the ability to vaccinate everyone; and providing outreach health services," added Memish.
