KSrelief Successfully Separates Conjoined Twins Yara And Lara In Riyadh Hospital
Saudi conjoined twins Yara and Lara were successfully separated today at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. This was announced by Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, the head of the medical team for the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme and General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). The surgery marks a significant achievement for the medical team involved.
The twins were connected at the lower abdomen and pelvis, sharing parts of their lower colon, rectum, urinary, and reproductive systems. Their pelvic bone was also involved. Despite these complexities, the medical team determined that separation was possible after thorough examinations and discussions.

Dr. Al Rabeeah expressed gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for their unwavering support. He highlighted that their backing has allowed the Saudi medical team to deliver top-notch specialized care, improving life quality for affected children and families.
The procedure took place at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital under the Ministry of National Guard. It involved 38 professionals across various specialties such as pediatric surgery, anesthesiology, urology, plastic surgery, orthopedics, nursing, and technical staff. The operation was conducted in nine stages to ensure precision and safety.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has assessed 150 cases from 27 countries over 35 years. Out of these, 65 separations have been successful, with Yara and Lara being the latest success story. This operation also marks the 16th successful separation of Saudi twins among 45 examined cases.
Yara and Lara were born with a combined weight of 10 kg but had independent upper and lower limbs. The medical team's decision to proceed with separation came after careful evaluation of their condition.
Acknowledgment of Team Efforts
Dr. Al Rabeeah thanked his colleagues for their dedication and professionalism during this complex procedure. He emphasized that their efforts reflect the noble values of Saudi Arabia in serving humanity globally wherever needed.
This successful surgery not only highlights Saudi Arabia's commitment to humanitarian efforts but also strengthens its position in providing advanced medical care worldwide.
