Klaus Schwab Emphasises Urgent Government Cooperation For Adapting To The Intelligent Age Transformation

Professor Klaus Schwab, Chairman of the World Economic Forum's Board of Trustees, highlighted the urgent need for global cooperation among governments to navigate the fast-changing intelligent age. Speaking at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025 in Dubai from 11 to 13 February, Schwab compared this era to past industrial revolutions, noting its unprecedented speed due to advancements in AI, quantum computing, and cryptocurrencies.

Schwab praised the UAE for appointing an AI minister in 2017, recognising the transformative potential of these technologies on all aspects of life. He stated that this shift has redefined global economies' foundations, now based on knowledge and data. Governments must adapt quickly by providing necessary infrastructure and fostering collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society.

Schwab Calls for Government Action in Intelligent Age

Schwab called for international cooperation in creating ethical policies around these technologies. He acknowledged their potential for both immense benefit and harm. A coordinated global approach is essential to address public concerns about rapid technological changes. Governments must educate citizens about these technologies, presenting them as opportunities rather than threats.

He emphasised that a key responsibility for governments is developing talent to shape this new era. Research from WEF suggests that within the next 5-10 years, 50% of jobs will be directly or indirectly affected by these changes. Education plays a crucial role in equipping individuals with necessary skills.

The WGS 2025 brings together over 30 heads of state and government, more than 80 international organisations, and 140 government delegations. The agenda includes 21 global forums exploring major future trends and transformations. There are over 200 interactive sessions featuring more than 300 prominent speakers such as presidents, ministers, experts, thought leaders, and decision-makers.

The Summit will also publish 30 strategic reports in collaboration with international knowledge partners. These reports aim to provide insights into future trends and transformations across various sectors.

Addressing Public Concerns

Schwab stressed the importance of addressing public anxieties arising from rapid technological advancements' complexity. He urged governments to play a vital role in educating people about these technologies. By framing them as opportunities rather than threats, governments can help alleviate fears.

Concluding with "constructive optimism," Schwab noted that the future is shaped by collective action rather than being predetermined. He warned against losing trust in governments or faith in the future itself as the greatest danger lies there.
