Saudi Arabia Joins FAO Agreement To Combat Illegal Fishing And Enhance Marine Biodiversity

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has announced Saudi Arabia's accession to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA). This agreement aims to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This step aligns with the Kingdom’s dedication to preserving marine biodiversity and promoting global environmental sustainability.

The ministry highlighted that joining the PSMA reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to international environmental agreements. It also demonstrates the Kingdom's resolve to protect marine resources from overfishing. The agreement complements national laws that criminalise IUU fishing, enhancing local authorities' ability to monitor ports and vessels effectively.

PSMA aims to strengthen coordination among national bodies responsible for fisheries, environmental protection, and port management. It enforces strict penalties on vessels involved in illegal activities. Additionally, it raises awareness among fishermen and coastal communities about the importance of adhering to environmental regulations.

The agreement facilitates international cooperation by enabling information sharing on IUU fishing activities. It standardises monitoring procedures globally, improving fisheries management worldwide. Moreover, it promotes investment opportunities that comply with port state measures.

Saudi Arabia’s participation in PSMA is part of its broader strategy to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The agreement prevents offending vessels from accessing ports or exporting their products internationally.
