Kingdom Advances Global Geospatial Information Management At UN Meeting

The Kingdom, represented by the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), attended the 14th meeting of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management. Dr. Eng. Mohammed bin Yahya Al Sayel, GEOSA President and Chairman of the Arab Committee of United Nations Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management, led the delegation to the event held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City from August 5 to 7.

During his address, Al Sayel expressed gratitude for the United Nations Committee's support for Riyadh hosting the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Center (THE ECOSYSTEM). He stated, "The Kingdom appreciates the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management's welcome of the Kingdom hosting the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Center (THE ECOSYSTEM) in Riyadh. The Kingdom also welcomes the report that includes enhancing arrangements for global geospatial information management." He highlighted that Saudi Arabia is diligently preparing to host THE ECOSYSTEM.

Kingdom's UN Geospatial Role

The meeting covered various agenda items, such as improving global geospatial information management arrangements and supporting future geospatial environments. Other topics included monitoring regional committees' contributions and thematic networks to the global geospatial plan, developing an integrated geospatial information framework, and establishing a global geodetic reference framework.

Al Sayel emphasized that THE ECOSYSTEM will explore different aspects of geospatial information in collaboration with the United Nations Committee of Experts on Geospatial Information Management, its subsidiary teams, member states, and other committee centers. This initiative aims to enhance global cooperation in managing geospatial data effectively.

One significant discussion point was using geospatial information to achieve sustainable development goals. The experts examined how geospatial data could support various sustainability initiatives globally. This aligns with broader efforts to integrate advanced technology into sustainable development practices.

The meeting also reviewed contributions from regional committees and thematic networks towards implementing the global geospatial information plan. These contributions are crucial for creating a cohesive strategy that leverages local expertise and resources for global benefit.

In conclusion, Saudi Arabia's participation in this meeting underscores its commitment to advancing global geospatial information management. By hosting THE ECOSYSTEM in Riyadh, the Kingdom aims to foster international collaboration and innovation in this critical field.
