Kingdom Leads Arab Countries’ Technical Committee For Statistics To Enhance Cooperation
The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) of Saudi Arabia led the Arab League Economic and Social Council’s Permanent Technical Committee for Statistics. This meeting took place in Jeddah on November 6 and 7, with participation from Arab leaders of official statistical centres. They discussed improving the exchange of technical and statistical knowledge.
During the opening session, GASTAT President Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Dosari acknowledged the League of Arab States for its efforts in promoting cooperation among member states in statistics. He highlighted the crucial role that these states play in advancing joint Arab initiatives in this field.

Dr. Al-Dosari stated, "The 42nd session of the Permanent Technical Committee for Statistics, held this year in Jeddah, underscores the importance of discussing the provision of accurate and comprehensive statistics for sustainable development indicators." He emphasised monitoring indicators, data collection, and collaboration with regional and international bodies.
The committee also focused on producing tourism sustainability indicators and improving data exchange among Arab countries' official statistical agencies. This effort aims to enhance the quality and availability of statistical information across the region.
The Permanent Technical Committee for Statistics first convened in Cairo in 1972. Representatives from Arab statistical offices participated to develop official statistical systems within their countries. The objective was to strengthen capabilities at various stages of statistical activities and improve technical programs.
This ongoing collaboration seeks to build robust statistical frameworks that support informed decision-making across Arab nations. By sharing expertise and resources, these countries aim to create a more integrated approach to data management.
The recent meeting highlighted the importance of accurate statistics for sustainable development goals. It reinforced the need for continuous dialogue and cooperation among member states to achieve these objectives effectively.
