King Salman Charter Award Honours Sustainable Architecture And Urban Heritage In Saudi Arabia
Under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Riyadh will host the closing ceremony of the inaugural King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award on Sunday evening. The event, organised by the Architecture and Design Commission, aims to integrate architectural heritage into a broader strategy that reflects cultural and environmental values across Saudi Arabia.
The award, launched in December 2023, honours urban projects adhering to environmental and architectural standards set by the Charter. It aims to enhance life quality, support innovation and sustainability, promote the Charter, and encourage high-quality outcomes from practitioners and specialists. The initiative also seeks to foster projects that embody "authenticity, continuity, human-centricity, livability, innovation, and sustainability."

The Architecture and Design Commission has announced a shortlist for the award. This list features leading projects selected based on criteria derived from the Charter’s values. The shortlisted projects fall into three main categories: "Built Projects," which include operational urban environments; "Unbuilt Projects," which cover designs for yet-to-be-completed urban environments; and "Student Projects," focusing on creative student works achieving architectural excellence.
The Charter’s vision aims to create architectural excellence while improving residents' quality of life. It focuses on forming architectural environments that build on cultural and environmental heritage while looking towards future developments. Launched in November 2021, the Charter serves as a strategic foundation for urbanisation and architecture's future in Saudi Arabia.
The Charter defines King Salman’s architectural vision by considering authenticity as creativity's essence. It advocates a flexible approach to novelty while stressing refinement beyond time, place, and materials to appreciate significant aesthetic contributions. This vision targets architects, individual designers, project owners, architectural firms, and university students.
Encouraging Exemplary Urban Projects
The award contributes to achieving the Charter’s goals by promoting exemplary urban projects. It encourages companies, practitioners, and students to incorporate the Charter’s values into their work. By doing so, it supports individual talents in the urban sector while enhancing awareness of the Charter's impact on architecture and urban design.
The launch of the Charter initiative included exhibitions, informational meetings about the Charter, various activities, public discussions on architecture and design across different cities in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, it featured participation in several international events.
This comprehensive approach ensures that Saudi Arabia's rich history and culture are highlighted while guiding decision-makers and specialists interested in architecture and urbanism.
The award not only recognises outstanding local projects but also promotes innovation within Saudi Arabia's architectural landscape. By honouring projects that adhere to these standards, it sets a benchmark for future developments in urban design.
As Riyadh prepares for this significant event under King Salman's patronage, it marks a milestone in integrating cultural heritage with modern architectural practices across the Kingdom.
