King Abdulaziz University Wins Prestigious Global Award For Disability Support Initiatives

In a significant achievement that underscores its commitment to inclusivity and innovation, King Abdulaziz University has once again been recognized on the global stage. The prestigious Zero Project Award, aimed at empowering people with disabilities worldwide, was bestowed upon the university for its innovative "We Hear You... The Preparatory Year for the Deaf" program. This marks the third consecutive win for the university amidst stiff competition from 523 candidates across 97 countries, highlighting its ongoing efforts to enrich scientific research and develop initiatives with substantial societal impact.

The accolade was awarded at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, where the university's project stood out for its exceptional contribution towards achieving the 10th goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: reducing inequalities. Dr. Musab bin Falah Al-Harbi, University Spokesman, emphasized that this achievement is a testament to the university's dedication to leveraging scientific research for projects that offer added value, particularly in supporting students with disabilities.

University Wins Global Disability Support Award

King Abdulaziz University has shown remarkable progress in this area, increasing its enrollment of students with disabilities from 68 in 2014 to 1,867 in 2023. This represents 30% of all students with disabilities across universities in the Kingdom, showcasing the university's leading role in providing comprehensive education and support services.

The "We Hear You... The Preparatory Year for the Deaf" program is a prime example of the university's innovative approach to education. Each year, the program accepts 72 students and focuses on intensively developing their language skills through specialized courses in Arabic and sign language interpreting and training. Additionally, it aims to promote deaf culture and sign language within the university community, furthering inclusivity and understanding.

This latest recognition not only highlights King Abdulaziz University's commitment to empowering students with disabilities but also positions it as a global leader in educational innovation and inclusivity. The university's success in securing the second position globally among universities for reducing inequalities underscores its significant contributions towards achieving sustainable development goals.
