King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Drives Biodiversity Gains With 1 Million Seedlings Plan

The King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority has started a strategic vegetation rehabilitation project within the reserve, targeting the planting of 1 million seedlings by 2030. The initiative is being implemented with the Saudi Electricity Company under a comprehensive cooperation agreement signed between the two entities in 2023.

The project supports the Saudi Green Initiative by aiming to increase vegetation cover, strengthen biodiversity, and combat desertification. It also seeks to protect natural resources, improve air and soil quality, and reinforce environmental sustainability across the reserve, in line with broader national environmental goals.

According to the authority, the vegetation cover project is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 targets related to the environment and quality of life. It contributes to national efforts to expand green areas, reduce climate change impacts, and enhance resilience of natural landscapes through long-term conservation work.

The initiative relies on an automated irrigation system designed for high efficiency and controlled water use. This system aims to reduce waste and limit environmental pressure. Project infrastructure uses recycled materials where possible, supporting circular economy principles and reflecting an approach focused on environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.

Planting activities will focus on native tree and shrub species that suit the reserve’s terrain and climate. The varieties include talh, wild sidr, athel, and ghaf. Using local species is intended to support biodiversity, resist land degradation, and help maintain stable and sustainable ecosystems within the reserve area.

The authority stated that this vegetation cover project forms part of a wider group of programmes to protect the natural environment in the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve. These programmes aim to develop strategic partnerships with national organisations and strengthen the reserve’s role as a key national site for nature conservation, consistent with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives for environmental sustainability and quality of life.
