King Abdulaziz Library Exhibits Rare 1938 Photos By Princess Alice, Showcasing Saudi-UK Historical Connections

The King Abdulaziz Public Library, in collaboration with the Saudi Embassy in the UK, has unveiled a photo exhibition in London. This exhibition features rare historical photographs taken by Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's granddaughter, during her 1938 expedition to Saudi Arabia. The event is hosted at the Royal Geographical Society and runs from October 16 to November 14.

Princess Alice's journey to Saudi Arabia was significant, as she and her husband, the Earl of Athlone, visited King Abdulaziz. During this nearly three-week trip, she captured 324 rare photographs. Some of these images are among the earliest colour photographs taken in Saudi Arabia. Her work provides a unique glimpse into the Kingdom's past.

Rare 1938 Princess Alice Photos on Display

The exhibition not only highlights Princess Alice's photographic journey but also underscores the deep historical ties between Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. These relations began with a treaty in 1915 and evolved into formal diplomatic relations by 1927. The photographs serve as a testament to this enduring relationship.

Faisal bin Muaammar, General Supervisor of the King Abdulaziz Public Library, spoke at the exhibition's opening. He emphasised Saudi Arabia's appeal to researchers and travellers due to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location. The Kingdom's role as custodian of the two holy mosques further enhances its global significance.

The original collection of Princess Alice's photographs is held by the King Abdulaziz Public Library. To commemorate this cultural exchange, a special selection of these images has been published. This initiative aims to highlight the depth of relations between Saudi Arabia and the UK through visual storytelling.

Princess Alice documented her admiration for Saudi Arabia's natural beauty through her photo journal. Despite facing challenges during her expedition, she managed to capture stunning images that continue to inspire curiosity about Arab societies today.

This exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to explore a pivotal moment in history through Princess Alice's lens. It celebrates not only her journey but also the ongoing cultural dialogue between two nations with shared historical connections.
