King Abdulaziz Festival Showcases Cultural Heritage And Economic Value Of Camels

The King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, held in Al-Sayahid desert, is the world's largest event of its kind. It celebrates the deep-rooted connection between Saudi culture and camels. This festival combines heritage, culture, and economic aspects, showcasing the historical bond between the Saudi people and these animals.

Camels have played a crucial role in daily life on the Arabian Peninsula. They were vital for water extraction, transportation, travel, and grazing. Visitors at the festival can learn about camel colours, which are important for assessing breed quality. Camels are divided into two main types: Al-Maghateer and Al-Majaheem.

Cultural and Economic Importance of Camels

The cultural camp at the festival offers a glimpse into traditional life. It features storytelling sessions with Bedouin poetry and camel tales. Guests are welcomed with Arabic coffee made using traditional tools. The camp also recreates Bedouin dwellings, displaying Bayt Al-Sha'ar—traditional tents crafted from handwoven goat hair in various sizes.

Al-Maghateer camels include lighter shades like Al-Wadh (white), Al-Sufur, Al-Shu'l (pure yellow), and Al-Humr (beige). In contrast, Al-Majaheem refers to black camels such as Al-Sahbaa, a light black variety. Majaheem camels are larger and calmer, known for superior milk production, making them highly valued by some Bedouins.

The camel sector significantly contributes to Saudi Arabia's economy. It generates over SAR2 billion annually through food products, textiles, tourism, and veterinary services. According to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, there are 2,235,297 camels in the Kingdom. Riyadh leads with 656,423 camels followed by Eastern Region and Makkah.

This number represents 58.1% of the national livestock population. The camel's journey from ancient caravans to modern innovations symbolizes pride and national identity in Saudi Arabia. This evolution merges authenticity with modernity while preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
