UN Urges Immediate Action To End Killing And Destruction In Middle East Conflict

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, emphasised the urgent need for political courage and compassion in the Middle East. "The killing, destruction, as well as bellicose posturing by those in positions of power, must end. There is no alternative to resolution of this conflict than the negotiating table. Widening conflict and progressive escalation put the lives and wellbeing of potentially millions of people across the region at risk," said Turk in a statement on the Middle East.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted the worsening situation for civilians in Lebanon, Gaza, Israel, and Syria. She noted that Beirut is facing increased Israeli air strikes, resulting in hundreds of deaths and over a million displaced individuals. Meanwhile, Hezbollah and other groups continue launching rockets into Israel.

UN Calls for End to Violence in Middle East

Shamdasani stressed that Volker Türk urges all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law. "The High Commissioner, Volker Türk, reminds all parties of their obligation to adhere to international humanitarian law, or the rules of war, with respect to the protection of civilians, civilian objects and infrastructure. Any alleged violations must be subjected to a prompt and thorough investigation, and those responsible where violations are found to have taken place must be held to account," she stated.

The ongoing denigration of UN agencies like UNRWA was also condemned by Shamdasani. She insisted that such harmful rhetoric from any source should cease immediately. The focus should remain on addressing human suffering rather than undermining international organisations.

In Gaza, the Israeli military has intensified operations in North Gaza over the past week. This escalation has further isolated the area from the rest of Gaza Strip, endangering civilian lives anew. Shamdasani concluded by highlighting this dire situation and urging continued attention on human suffering there.

The call for accountability remains strong as alleged violations must undergo thorough investigations. Those found responsible should face consequences to uphold justice and protect civilians amidst escalating tensions in these regions.
