Khamis Bin Rimthan: Celebrating A Pioneer In Saudi Oil Discovery At STEAM Festival

The STEAM Festival at King Salman Science Oasis highlights the inspiring story of Khamis bin Rimthan, a pioneering Saudi geologist. In 1933, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud initiated the journey of oil exploration by signing an oil concession agreement. This marked the beginning of a two-year expedition led by Khamis bin Rimthan and his team of geologists. They explored Jabal Al-Bari and Dhahran hills, with Rimthan's exceptional skills in ground reading and traditional navigation proving invaluable in guiding them through the vast desert landscape.

Khamis bin Rimthan's expertise was instrumental in the discovery of Dammam No. 7 well, also known as Prosperity Well, in 1938. This discovery was a pivotal moment in Saudi Arabia's history. He continued to work for Aramco until his death in 1959. In recognition of his contributions, Aramco named the Rimthan field after him in 1974, located 95 kilometers east of Qaisumah.

Further honouring his legacy, Aramco launched an oil tanker named Rimthan in 2017. This act celebrated him as one of the most renowned desert guides. Since then, Saudi Arabia has become one of the world's leading oil producers, sparking significant development across various sectors within the Kingdom.
