Khamis Bin Rimthan: The Desert Guide Who Shaped Saudi Arabia's Oil Exploration Success

Khamis bin Rimthan Al-Ajmi is a pivotal figure in Saudi Arabia's oil history. His skills as a desert guide were vital to early oil exploration efforts, marking him as a national icon in the country's developmental narrative. His expertise was instrumental in navigating the vast desert landscapes, aiding geologists in their quest for oil.

In 1933, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud signed a concession agreement with the Standard Oil Company of California (SOCAL). This agreement initiated oil exploration and required employing Saudi citizens. Khamis bin Rimthan was selected to guide the geological team due to his exceptional ability to interpret the desert terrain and navigate using stars.

Rimthan's guidance was crucial in identifying potential drilling sites and creating initial maps of the region. His contributions were significant during the five-year search for oil, culminating in March 1938 with the discovery at Dammam No. 7, known as the "Prosperity Well." This well marked the beginning of commercial oil production in Saudi Arabia.

A year after this discovery, King Abdulaziz witnessed another milestone: the loading of the first oil tanker at Ras Tanura Port. This event symbolised Saudi Arabia's connection to global industrialisation and marked a new era for the Kingdom.

Khamis bin Rimthan continued his work with Aramco until he passed away in 1959. He played an important role in naming various mountains and sites across the Eastern Region. In recognition of his contributions, the Rimthan field was named after him in 1974, and an oil tanker bearing his name was launched in 2017.

His grandson, Shabib Al-Ajmi, shared insights into his grandfather's legacy with the Saudi Press Agency. "He was a symbol of perseverance and hard work who inspired generations," Shabib stated. He highlighted how Rimthan's skills laid foundational elements for Saudi Arabia's burgeoning oil industry.
