Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Inaugurates IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 In Abu Dhabi
Under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has officially opened the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. This event marks its first occurrence in the GCC region and is themed "Powering Transformative Conservation."
The UAE's commitment to environmental protection is evident through its initiatives to restore ecosystems and protect endangered species. H.H. Sheikh Khaled highlighted that sustainability is central to the UAE's future vision, emphasising the importance of maintaining environmental balance for sustainable development and future generations' wellbeing.
The Congress was graced by notable figures such as Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; and Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These leaders underscore the UAE's dedication to conservation efforts.
Global conservation leaders also attended the opening ceremony. Notable attendees included Surangel Whipps Jr, President of Palau; Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa; Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah; Dr Sylvia Earle; Juan Carlos Navarro; Elizabeth Maruma Mrema; and Dr Musonda Mumba. Their presence highlights the event's international significance.
The UAE has established itself as a global model in nature conservation. Its efforts include expanding protected areas to cover over 15% of its land area. The nation actively supports international sustainability initiatives, contributing to renewable energy adoption and global food and water security.
Hosting this international event underscores the UAE’s leadership in promoting international cooperation and innovation in environmental action. These efforts align with the National Biodiversity Strategy 2031, which focuses on enhancing nature-based solutions and protecting endangered species like the Arabian Oryx.
