KFSHRC Transplants Three Hearts In Less Than A Day, Restoring Hope

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully transplanted hearts into three patients within 24 hours. The patients, two men and a child, were suffering from heart failure and weakened heart muscles. Hearts were transferred from donors in Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and Riyadh to the hospital.

The journey began with KFSHRC's medical teams traveling to Abu Dhabi and Jeddah to procure hearts from brain-dead donors. These organs were transported by private aircraft to Riyadh. Another team was dispatched to King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) in Riyadh for the third heart. The Riyadh Traffic Department facilitated quick ambulance transfers from King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) and KAMC to KFSHRC.

3 Heart Transplants in 24 Hours at KFSHRC

The first patient, a nine-year-old girl with heart muscle weakness, had an artificial pump implanted in March. She remained hospitalized, awaiting a matching donor. A suitable donor was found through coordination with the UAE's Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation and HAYAT. KFSHRC's team procured the heart at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, flew it to KKIA, and transported it by ambulance to KFSHRC. Dr. Zuhair Al-Halees led the successful transplant surgery.

The second patient, a 40-year-old man with end-stage heart disease, initially received a temporary pump followed by a durable artificial pump lasting seven years. A matching donor heart was identified and transported from Jeddah to Riyadh. Dr. Feras Khaliel led the transplant surgery at KFSHRC. The patient is now stable, mobilizing well, eating, and communicating with his family.

The third patient, a 41-year-old man with fourth-degree heart muscle failure, had an artificial pump implanted a year ago. When a matching donor was found at KAMC in Riyadh, the heart was procured and transported to KFSHRC. Dr. Khaliel also led this successful surgery. The patient is currently under medical observation and in stable condition.

Challenges of Heart Transplants

Timing is crucial for successful heart transplants; the period between procurement and transplantation should not exceed five hours. This poses logistical challenges when donors are located in different regions or countries. Every minute's delay can be critical to the transplant's success.

The procedures involved collaboration across countries, regions, and hospitals. Regulatory procedures were completed, approvals obtained from donors’ families, and coordination between medical teams ensured success.

KFSHRC's Achievements

KFSHRC reaffirms its capabilities in performing complex operations despite challenges. It harnesses efforts with relevant authorities to save lives and bring hope to patients and their families.

KFSHRC ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally among the world's top 250 academic medical centers for two consecutive years.
