KFSHRC Achieves Milestone With First Robotic Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy In Middle East
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has successfully performed the first robotic Ivor Lewis esophagectomy in the Middle East. The procedure was conducted on a 46-year-old man with gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, a cancer near where the esophagus meets the stomach. This innovative surgery highlights the hospital's commitment to advanced medical techniques.
The patient showed remarkable recovery, regaining mobility within two days post-surgery. By the fifth day, he began oral intake and was discharged within 10 days. This swift recovery underscores the benefits of robotic surgery in reducing pain and complications compared to traditional methods.

Dr. Khalid Aldaghri, a consultant in bariatric, upper gastrointestinal, and robotic surgery at KFSHRC, led this complex procedure using the Ivor Lewis technique. This method involves two phases: an abdominal phase for stomach mobilization and gastric conduit creation, followed by a thoracic phase where the diseased esophagus is resected and connected robotically within the chest.
The precision of robotic systems allows surgeons to access deep anatomical areas without large incisions. This enhances safety, reduces risks, and improves outcomes in complex cancer surgeries. The technology offers three-dimensional high-definition visualization, stable instrument control, and superior access within confined spaces.
The success of this surgery relied on close collaboration among surgical, anesthesia, nursing, and technical teams. They coordinated efforts from preoperative planning through postoperative recovery. This reflects KFSHRC’s multidisciplinary model aimed at improving patient outcomes and clinical efficiency.
KFSHRC's advanced robotic features significantly enhance safety and accuracy during esophagectomies. These capabilities allow for precise dissection and better preservation of surrounding structures like nerves and vessels while reducing intraoperative risks.
Global Recognition
"As a medical milestone, the success of this procedure opens the door to broader applications of robotic surgery at KFSHRC," stated a press release. It enables more patients to benefit from advanced surgical techniques while reinforcing KFSHRC's commitment to innovation and effective alternatives to traditional approaches.
KFSHRC has achieved significant recognition globally. It ranks first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th worldwide among top academic medical centers for 2025. Additionally, it was named the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East by Brand Finance in 2024.
The hospital also made Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Smart Hospitals for 2025. These accolades highlight its dedication to excellence in healthcare services.
