KFSHRC Successfully Performs Robotic Liver Transplant On Eight-Year-Old Child

The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a significant milestone by performing a liver lobe transplant on an eight-year-old child using advanced robotic surgery. This innovative procedure allowed the young patient to leave the hospital just two weeks after the operation.

Prof. Dieter Broering, Executive Director of the Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, led the surgical team. He noted, "Robotic surgical techniques have traditionally been limited to adults, but we succeeded in adapting them for children, offering exceptional precision and a marked reduction in complications." The procedure required a unique approach due to the child's small size and limited space for surgery.

Robotic Liver Surgery Saves Child's Life

The hospital's extensive experience with robotic organ transplants in adults facilitated this adaptation for pediatric use. A customised surgical plan was essential, involving precise adjustments of robotic instrument entry points to fit the child's anatomy. This careful planning ensured maximum safety during the procedure.

This operation is seen as a model for expanding robotic surgery in pediatric care. The technology provides precise control, reduces complications, and enhances safety. It sets a precedent for developing child-specific robotic surgical systems in the future.

KFSHRC has established itself as a global leader in robotic surgery through various groundbreaking achievements. The hospital previously performed the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant and the first robotic liver transplant. These accomplishments highlight KFSHRC’s dedication to pioneering medical innovations and delivering top-tier specialized healthcare.

This recent success is part of KFSHRC's ongoing efforts to push boundaries in medical technology. By continually advancing their capabilities, they aim to improve patient outcomes and set new standards in healthcare excellence worldwide.
