KFSHRC Achieves Milestone In Thoracic Aorta Repair Using Bovine Pericardial Graft

A 53-year-old patient has been saved by King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) through a complex surgery. The procedure involved replacing the damaged section of his thoracic aorta with a biological graft made from bovine pericardium. This innovative method, a first in the Middle East, successfully managed the infection and provided a safer recovery compared to synthetic grafts.

The patient was in critical condition due to a ruptured mycotic thoracic aortic aneurysm. This rare condition can cause fatal internal bleeding and has a mortality rate of up to 90% without prompt treatment. A coordinated effort from vascular, cardiac, thoracic surgery, and intensive care teams was crucial to stop the bleeding and stabilize blood circulation.

Given the active infection in the patient's aortic wall, synthetic grafts posed higher risks of contamination or failure. The team opted for a biological graft as it offers better resistance to bacteria and excellent biocompatibility. Bovine pericardium also provides the flexibility needed to fit around the irregular tear precisely.

This approach allowed surgeons to rebuild the aortic wall securely, minimizing risks of leakage or detachment. It improved healing chances during recovery. Follow-up imaging confirmed graft stability with no signs of recurrent infection, indicating steady improvement in the patient's condition.

This achievement highlights KFSHRC’s status as a leader in complex vascular surgeries. It marks progress in using biological grafts for infected cases and supports safer surgical practices.
