KFSHRC Implements Innovative Non-Surgical Technique For Treating Peripheral Artery Blockage

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully treating patients with below-the-knee peripheral artery stenosis and occlusion. This was accomplished using an innovative, minimally invasive technique. The procedure involves inserting a next-generation bioresorbable stent through a fine catheter in the thigh, eliminating the need for open surgery.

This advanced method is now in use at KFSHRC's Riyadh and Jeddah locations. It involves placing a bioresorbable stent into narrowed or blocked vessels to restore blood flow temporarily. Once its job is done, the stent dissolves naturally, removing the need for a permanent implant and reducing future complications.

KFSHRC's New Non-Surgical Artery Treatment

The new approach not only restores blood flow but also relieves pain and accelerates healing of chronic wounds. It significantly reduces the risk of amputation. KFSHRC is now the first centre in Saudi Arabia, and third globally outside the United States, to adopt this advanced treatment method.

The success of this procedure was driven by collaboration between KFSHRC's Interventional Radiology Department and Vascular Surgery departments, along with nursing teams in Riyadh and Jeddah. This teamwork highlights KFSHRC’s dedication to integrated patient care.

KFSHRC plans to expand research on this technique further. They aim to collaborate with global medical institutions to assess its long-term effectiveness. This will contribute to developing new treatment protocols for peripheral vascular diseases.

This minimally invasive approach speeds up recovery and improves leg circulation, allowing patients to regain mobility more effectively. The hospital's commitment to advancing medical treatments continues as they explore new possibilities in patient care.
