KFSHRC Unveils First Mobile Stroke Unit In MENA To Enhance Patient Treatment Speed
King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has introduced the Mobile Stroke Ambulance Unit, a pioneering initiative in the Middle East and North Africa. This unit brings cutting-edge medical technology and expertise directly to stroke patients, enhancing their chances of recovery and survival. The unit's primary goal is to provide life-saving care within the crucial first hour after stroke symptoms appear.
The Mobile Stroke Unit is dispatched following a report from the patient's family to the Saudi Red Crescent Authority about symptoms like arm weakness or facial drooping. Upon notification, KFSHRC’s emergency team deploys the unit to the patient's location. This allows for on-site diagnosis and immediate treatment, which is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

The ambulance is equipped with a specialized medical team, including a vascular neurologist, critical care nurse, paramedic, and CT scan technician. This team performs brain imaging in the ambulance to identify stroke causes before reaching the hospital. Such immediate intervention can significantly enhance recovery chances by addressing issues promptly.
Stroke poses a significant health challenge globally and is the third leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia. It occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or a blood vessel ruptures, causing brain damage. Strokes can affect anyone at any time if risk factors are present.
The mobile unit addresses specific challenges faced by Riyadh residents, such as traffic congestion and long transport times to hospitals. These delays can critically impact treatment outcomes and patient quality of life by hindering timely access to essential care.
This innovative unit forms part of KFSHRC’s pavilion at the Global Health Exhibition held from October 21-23 in Riyadh. Visitors can explore its advanced features, including CT scans, MRI, computed radiography, carotid artery ultrasound, and cerebral angiography. These technologies bolster KFSHRC’s position as a leader in novel stroke treatment solutions.
Enhancing Stroke Care
The mobile stroke unit enables medical teams to use travel time effectively for immediate care provision. This approach significantly improves recovery chances by 70%, reducing long-term disabilities and increasing the likelihood of restoring normal body functions.
By integrating advanced technology with clinical expertise, KFSHRC aims to revolutionise stroke care delivery in Saudi Arabia. The initiative highlights their commitment to improving health outcomes through innovative solutions tailored to local needs.
