KFSHRC Launches First Dedicated Palliative Care Program For Adolescents And Young Adults In The Arab World
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has initiated a pioneering palliative care program for adolescents and young adults. This is the first of its kind in the Arab region, aiming to enhance life quality for this age group during their treatment journey. The World Health Organization highlights that only 14% of those needing palliative care worldwide receive it, revealing a significant service gap.
Research underscores the benefits of integrating palliative care into treatment plans for young patients with severe illnesses. It reduces symptoms and enhances life quality. Cancer patients often lack adequate pain management and psychological support, making them prime candidates for such care. Palliative care provides a comprehensive approach, improving life quality for those with terminal illnesses like advanced cancers, heart disease, neurological disorders, and organ failure.

This type of care goes beyond pain relief by offering psychological and social support. It aids informed decision-making and enhances patient experiences. For young adults, these services tackle unique challenges like continuing education or work, managing illness's psychological effects, and ensuring autonomy and dignity in care plans.
KFSHRC’s innovative program is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including palliative care doctors, specially trained nurses, social workers, and mental health professionals. This team addresses the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of both patients and their families comprehensively.
In line with global best practices, KFSHRC’s Advanced Palliative Care Fellowship Program has achieved triple accreditation from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, the European Society for Medical Oncology, and the International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care. This accreditation ensures high clinical competency levels among healthcare professionals who provide culturally sensitive palliative care to young people.
The program not only aims to enhance immediate patient care but also aspires to be a regional model. It encourages similar initiatives across the Arab world to bridge the critical gap in palliative services for young patients with life-threatening conditions.
