KFSHRC Successfully Transplants Heart For Saudi Child Using Organ From UAE Donor

A heart transplant was successfully performed on a seven-year-old Saudi child at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh. The organ, sourced from a brain-dead donor in Abu Dhabi, UAE, highlights the advanced regional cooperation in organ transplantation. This life-saving procedure followed donor family consent and regulatory approvals.

The operation required meticulous coordination between the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation and the UAE's National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue (HAYAT). The process involved precise medical and logistical steps, beginning with organ extraction, air transport to Riyadh, and swift preparation of operating theaters.

KFSHRC Transplants Heart for Saudi Child

The child suffered from advanced heart failure due to a complex congenital defect. After exhausting all treatment options like medications, respiratory support, and pacemaker implantation without improvement, the child was placed on the urgent transplant list. The transplant was crucial as no other treatments were viable.

Heart transplants are time-sensitive; the period between removing the heart from the donor and implanting it into the patient must not exceed five hours. This constraint poses significant logistical challenges, especially when donors are located overseas or in different regions within the Kingdom.

The successful transplant underscores KFSHRC's ability to overcome complex challenges through collaboration with relevant authorities. This partnership aims to deliver specialized care that brings hope to patients and their families by saving critical cases through humanitarian cooperation.

KFSHRC's Global Recognition

KFSHRC is renowned globally for its cardiac expertise. It has achieved milestones like the world's first fully robotic heart transplant and robotic artificial heart pump implantation without chest incision. These achievements highlight Saudi Arabia's leadership in complex cardiac surgery.

In 2024, KFSHRC ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers. It was also recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East by Brand Finance rankings.

Furthermore, Newsweek magazine included KFSHRC in its list of the world's best 250 hospitals and World’s Best Smart Hospitals for 2025. These accolades reflect its commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.
