KFSHRC Honoured With Hamdan Foundation Medical Excellence Award For Advancements In Genetic Research

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has been awarded the Arab Award for Research in Healthcare within the Medical Excellence Awards of 2024. This accolade was given by the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences. The award recognises KFSHRC's significant study on Mendelian diseases, which are genetic disorders caused by mutations in a single gene.

The research titled "Diagnostic implications of pitfalls in causal variant identification" involved studying 4,577 families. It identified key barriers to accurate genetic diagnoses, such as phenotypic complexities and novel gene-disease associations. The study also highlighted challenges related to novel inheritance patterns and pedigree analysis.

This research emphasises the importance of a comprehensive approach to diagnosis beyond sequencing technologies. It offers insights that enhance global programs for undiagnosed diseases. By addressing non-sequencing challenges, the study improved diagnostic yield by 71% and identified causal variants in 54.5% of previously undiagnosed cases.

The recognition from the Hamdan Medical Awards underscores KFSHRC’s leadership in genetic research and healthcare innovation. It highlights the hospital's dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and delivering innovative solutions to improve patient outcomes while setting global healthcare standards.
