KFSHRC Performs First-Ever Robotic Intracranial Tumor Resection, Advancing Neurosurgical Precision

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a significant milestone in robotic medicine. They performed the first-ever robotic intracranial tumour removal, setting a new global standard in neurosurgery. A 68-year-old patient, suffering from severe headaches and concentration issues, underwent the procedure to remove a 4.5-centimetre brain tumour using robotic arms.

The surgery was completed in one hour, and the patient was discharged fully conscious within 24 hours, which is nearly four times faster than traditional brain surgeries. Dr. Homoud Aldahash, a Consultant of Skull Base Tumors at KFSHRC, led the operation. He highlighted that the robotic system provided exceptional precision and control, allowing surgeons to navigate critical neurovascular structures safely.

Dr. Aldahash emphasised the significance of the patient's quick recovery: "The patient’s same-day discharge, fully conscious and without complications, represents a new benchmark for neurosurgical innovation." The use of robotic arms guided by a 3D optical system enabled surgeons to operate with a clear and magnified view of the brain.

Advanced image-guided navigation technology played a crucial role in ensuring precise tumour removal while safeguarding vital brain areas. This technological advancement marks a shift from previous methods where manual removal under a surgical microscope relied heavily on human steadiness and visual clarity.

KFSHRC's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Majid Alfayyadh, linked this achievement to the hospital’s ongoing transformation journey. "This achievement reflects KFSHRC’s growing role in shaping the future of global medicine," he stated. This landmark procedure adds to KFSHRC’s expanding portfolio of robotic surgical breakthroughs.
