KFSHRC Successfully Completes World's First Robotic-Assisted Artificial Heart Pump Implantation

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a medical milestone by performing the first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump, the HeartMate 3, developed by Abbott. The operation was conducted on a 35-year-old man who had been hospitalized for 120 days due to severe heart failure, which also affected his kidney and lung functions.

The surgery was led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, who heads cardiac surgery and directs the hospital’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program. The patient spent only four days in intensive care, compared to the usual 26 days required for similar surgeries using traditional methods. Recovery is expected to be much quicker, with discharge anticipated within 10 days instead of the typical 63 days.

Dr. Khaliel highlighted the precision and safety of robotic-assisted surgery, noting that there were no infections or bleeding during or after the operation. "The patient was amazed at the minimal scarring, reflecting the advanced capabilities of robotic technology," he stated. This innovative approach not only reduces recovery time but also minimizes complications associated with conventional surgical procedures.
