KFSHRC Successfully Completes World's First Robotic-Assisted Artificial Heart Pump Implantation

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a medical milestone by performing the first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump, the HeartMate 3, developed by Abbott. This procedure represents a notable advancement in both medical technology and patient care. The operation was conducted on a 35-year-old man who had been hospitalized for 120 days due to severe heart failure, which also affected his kidney and lung functions.

The surgery was led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, who heads cardiac surgery and directs the hospital’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program. The patient spent only four days in intensive care, compared to the usual 26 days required for similar surgeries using traditional methods. Recovery is expected to be much quicker, with discharge anticipated within 10 days instead of the typical 63 days.

Dr. Khaliel highlighted the precision and safety of robotic-assisted surgery, noting that there were no infections or bleeding during or after the operation. "The patient was amazed at the minimal scarring, reflecting the advanced capabilities of robotic technology," he stated. This innovative approach not only reduces recovery time but also minimizes complications associated with conventional surgical procedures.

This successful procedure adds to KFSHRC’s history of global achievements in healthcare innovation. The hospital has previously accomplished the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant and robotic liver transplantation. These accomplishments reinforce KFSHRC’s dedication to pioneering advancements in specialized healthcare, solidifying its position as a leader on the global stage.

The patient is now on track to achieve his goal of returning home to his family, thanks to this groundbreaking surgical intervention. The use of robotic technology in such complex procedures highlights its potential to transform patient outcomes significantly. The reduced hospital stay and quicker recovery time are significant benefits for patients undergoing such critical surgeries.

KFSHRC continues to push boundaries in medical science through its commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into patient care. By achieving these milestones, the hospital not only enhances its reputation but also sets new standards for healthcare institutions worldwide.
