KFSHRC Successfully Performs Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty On Kidney Transplant Patient To Enhance Quality Of Life
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a significant medical milestone. They successfully performed an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) on a patient who had previously received a kidney transplant. This complex procedure required careful management of immunosuppressive drugs to avoid complications that could harm the transplanted organ.
This ESG procedure is distinct from surgical sleeve gastrectomy as it involves no abdominal cuts, which is vital for transplant patients. Instead, an endoscope is inserted through the mouth to suture the stomach internally. This reduces its size, helping patients lose weight and improve their health without invasive surgery.

The primary goal of this procedure was to tackle obesity and metabolic issues. These factors can adversely affect the health of a transplanted kidney, increase cardiovascular risks, and diminish long-term patient outcomes. By addressing these issues, the ESG aims to enhance graft survival and improve the quality of life for transplant recipients.
A team of medical specialists led by Dr. Ehab Abufarhaneh, a Consultant in Adult Transplant Gastroenterology and Hepatology, performed the procedure. Their collaborative effort ensured the success of this complex case, marking a significant advancement in safe treatment solutions for transplant recipients.
KFSHRC's achievements extend beyond this procedure. "KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the third consecutive year and recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, it was included in the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine," stated their release.
This accomplishment underscores KFSHRC's commitment to advancing healthcare solutions for complex cases. The successful ESG procedure represents a promising step forward in improving outcomes for transplant patients while maintaining their overall health.
