KFSHRC Advances Treatment Of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy With Innovative Stereo-EEG Procedures
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) Epilepsy Center has solidified its status as a leading institution for Stereo-Electroencephalography (Stereo-EEG) procedures. Performing one to two cases weekly, it stands as the largest epilepsy surgery center in the Middle East. This reinforces its commitment to providing advanced solutions for drug-resistant epilepsy.
Since 1993, KFSHRC's Epilepsy Center has treated over 4,000 patients and conducted more than 2,000 surgeries for those unresponsive to medication. In recent years, it introduced the Stereo-EEG program, a minimally invasive diagnostic tool that enhances seizure localization and reduces complications.

This technique marks a significant step forward in managing drug-resistant epilepsy. It allows precise identification of seizure foci, aiding in tailored treatment plans like targeted resection or neurostimulation implants. These interventions help restore independence and improve life quality for many patients.
The procedure involves inserting ultra-thin electrodes through small skull openings to accurately locate seizure foci. This approach minimizes risks linked with traditional open surgery and supports treatment strategies that have enabled most patients to achieve full seizure control and regain independence.
This innovation also reduces long-term healthcare expenses by decreasing reliance on costly anti-seizure medications with significant side effects. Patients can return to work faster, reducing productivity losses and enhancing their overall well-being.
According to the World Health Organization, epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people globally, with 30% resistant to medication. This condition severely impacts their ability to work, drive, and perform daily activities, making surgery the only viable option for restoring their quality of life.
