KFSHRC Celebrates Over 5,000 Successful Kidney Transplants Milestone
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) has reached a significant milestone by performing 5,000 kidney transplants since its Transplant Program began in 1981. This achievement places KFSHRC among the top global health centres, according to a press release from the hospital.
KFSHRC's Kidney Transplant Program has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. Since 2010, more than 3,000 transplants have been conducted, with around 1,250 of these occurring in the last three years alone. Last year, the hospital performed 80 paediatric kidney transplants, which is "the highest number conducted by any hospital in a single year," as stated in the release.

The centre has adopted advanced technologies to enhance its transplant procedures. It now relies entirely on minimally invasive surgery for kidney removal from donors, including robotic assistance. Surgeons can also perform kidney transplants on selected patients using robotic surgery, which improves precision and safety.
The Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) program at KFSHRC has transformed the transplantation landscape by addressing compatibility issues between patients and donors. This program facilitates donor exchanges when blood types or tissues do not match the intended recipient. As a result, KFSHRC has become "a leader in paired donation transplants compared to any single health centre in the United States and Europe."
The hospital boasts impressive survival rates for both kidneys and patients one year post-transplant, ranging from 97% to 99%. This success underscores KFSHRC's status as a premier transplant centre within its organisation.
Beyond standard kidney transplants, KFSHRC specialises in complex cases involving different blood groups, low-weight paediatric patients, paired exchanges, and patients with high body mass index. The hospital's expertise in these areas further solidifies its reputation as a leading institution.
Global Recognition
KFSHRC has maintained its position as the top institution in the Middle East and Africa for two consecutive years. It ranks 20th globally among the top 250 academic medical centres worldwide. Additionally, Brand Finance recognises it as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East for 2024. Newsweek Magazine also lists it among the top 250 hospitals globally.
This series of accomplishments highlights KFSHRC's commitment to excellence in healthcare and its role as a leader in kidney transplantation on both regional and global scales.
