KFSHRC Secures Accreditation As National Reference Centre For Metagenomics Research Services

The Genome Medicine Center of Excellence at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) has achieved international recognition. It received accreditation from Oxford Nanopore Technologies as a certified service provider in metagenomics. This positions KFSHRC as the national reference laboratory for analysing genetic material of microorganisms with precision and speed.

This accreditation represents a major step forward in diagnosing infectious diseases. It strengthens KFSHRC's role as a leading healthcare and research institution, contributing to community protection and supporting Saudi Arabia's health security. The centre can now detect resistant or mutated pathogens that traditional methods might miss.

KFSHRC Becomes National Reference Centre for Metagenomics

Metagenomics offers an advanced alternative to conventional diagnostic methods, which often require days to isolate and culture microbes. This technology enables timely therapeutic interventions, reducing infection spread and limiting complications and antimicrobial resistance. KFSHRC's accreditation reinforces its position as a national reference, aiding hospitals across the Kingdom with advanced laboratory services.

The achievement also integrates KFSHRC into a global network of accredited research centres using metagenomics technologies. These technologies are crucial tools in combating epidemics and enhancing health security worldwide. The centre’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge global technologies aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the national health transformation program.

KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for two consecutive years. It is recognised as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East according to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings.

Additionally, Newsweek magazine included KFSHRC in its World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025. This recognition underscores its role as a national research infrastructure that supports healthcare providers, improves diagnostic quality, and enhances healthcare system efficiency.

This milestone reflects KFSHRC’s dedication to serving patients through advanced technologies. It supports healthcare providers by improving diagnostic and therapeutic quality while enhancing overall system efficiency. Such efforts contribute significantly to achieving the objectives outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
