KAUST Achieves Top 100 Ranking In Times Higher Education Impact Rankings For Sustainability
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a beacon of innovation and education in Saudi Arabia, showcasing the nation's strides in science and technology through sustainable practices. This year, KAUST achieved a significant milestone by ranking among the top 100 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for the first time. The university's dedication to sustainability has been consistently acknowledged in these rankings.
KAUST's commitment to sustainability is evident in its impressive performance across various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university ranks among the top 10 globally for SDG11, which focuses on Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG14, dedicated to Life Below Water. Additionally, KAUST is within the top 20 worldwide for SDG6, Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG17, Partnerships for the Goals.

In the Arab region, KAUST stands out by ranking fifth among universities and third within Saudi Arabia. Notably, it holds the number one position for SDG11 and SDG14 among Arab universities. These achievements underscore KAUST's role as a leader in sustainable development within the region.
Sir Edward Byrne AC, President of KAUST, emphasised: "Our commitment to sustainability is at the core of KAUST's mission. We harness science and innovation to create solutions for some of the world's most urgent challenges, fostering an inclusive and resilient community at KAUST and with our partners in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
Ana Margarida Costa, a professor at KAUST and Chief Sustainability Officer, remarked: "This new ranking confirms that KAUST is accelerating its sustainability efforts across education, research, innovation, operations, and outreach." Costa further highlighted that the university's multidisciplinary approach focuses on real-world applications and partnerships both locally and globally.
The latest SDG Highlight Report from May details several initiatives by KAUST aligned with each of the 17 SDGs. These include solar-powered atmospheric water harvesters providing affordable drinking water in arid areas and advanced imaging techniques identifying regions prone to climate-related disasters. Additionally, new medicines are being developed to protect coral reefs.
Strategic Alignment with National Priorities
The report also mentions four Centers of Excellence opened last year at KAUST. Each centre supports research aligned with one or more pillars of Saudi Arabia's research, development, and innovation strategy. These efforts reflect national priorities such as energy diversification, food and water security, improved healthcare, and future-oriented sectors.
KAUST's alignment with Saudi Arabia's national goals mirrors its dedication to enhancing quality of life through sustainable development. The university continues to drive significant impact both locally and globally through its innovative approaches.
