KAUST And SFDA Collaborate On Innovative Method To Ensure Olive Oil Quality Amid Fraud Concerns
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has introduced a novel scientific method to identify adulterated olive oil and assess contamination levels. This initiative, in partnership with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), addresses rising concerns about olive oil fraud in the European Union. The EU has seen record levels of counterfeit labeling, which have eroded consumer trust.
The innovative approach employs Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technology to ensure that olive oil on store shelves is genuine and aligns with label claims. KAUST's findings are detailed in the journal Food Control. Saudi Arabia, a major importer of olive oil, is worried about producers diluting olive oils with other vegetable oils. This practice deceives consumers into buying lower-quality products at cheaper prices.

The SFDA is committed to safeguarding food safety for all citizens and residents. It has started exploring new analytical methods for evaluating olive oil, selecting KAUST as a crucial partner. Dr. Hiba Alharbi from SFDA’s laboratories highlighted KAUST's expertise in advanced analytical techniques. These include high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis, which improve detection of vegetable oils mixed with olive oil.
Both organizations are considering expanding their collaboration to detect plastics, microplastics, and other contaminants in cooking oils. KAUST’s NMR facilities work with institutions nationwide to address national priorities. This partnership exemplifies how collaborations can enhance food quality and public health in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia's concern over olive oil manipulation reflects a global issue where some producers blend olive oils with cheaper vegetable oils. This allows them to sell inferior products at reduced prices while misleading consumers about quality. The SFDA emphasizes its dedication to ensuring food safety by adopting innovative methods like those developed by KAUST.
The collaboration between KAUST and SFDA aims to restore consumer confidence by guaranteeing the authenticity of olive oil products. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, they seek to protect consumers from fraudulent practices that compromise product quality.
This joint effort not only addresses local concerns but also sets an example for international cooperation in tackling food fraud issues. By focusing on advanced detection methods, both entities aim to uphold high standards of food safety and integrity.
