KAUST Collaborates With Abdul Latif Jameel Motors And Toyota To Enhance Hydrogen Fuel Cell Research In Saudi Arabia
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have joined forces to advance hydrogen fuel cell research in Saudi Arabia. This collaboration supports the Kingdom's efforts to reduce carbon emissions in transportation and other sectors, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.
Saudi Arabia is strategically positioned to produce green and blue hydrogen due to its abundant renewable energy resources. The Kingdom plans to generate around 2.9 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, aiming for cost-effective production for both local use and export.

The partnership's core involves KAUST acquiring Proton Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell modules from TMC. These modules will be used in a cutting-edge laboratory at KAUST's Clean Energy Research Platform (CERP). This facility aims to lead Saudi Arabia's hydrogen innovation, focusing on adapting fuel cells to the region's specific environmental conditions.
Professor Mani Sarathy from KAUST expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with TMC and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors. "At KAUST, we are excited to collaborate with TMC and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors to drive the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in Saudi Arabia, aligning with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and net-zero goals for 2060," he stated.
Professor Sarathy's team at CERP is spearheading research on PEM fuel cells' performance, durability, and environmental integration. Supported by TMC and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, they are conducting modeling and experimental studies. These studies aim to evaluate factors like temperature sensitivity, humidity impact, and efficiency to enhance these fuel cells' environmental benefits within Saudi infrastructure.
The research aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals by optimizing hydrogen fuel cells for regional conditions. This ensures their efficiency and reliability while contributing to sustainable solutions for a greener future in Saudi Arabia.
Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
This partnership highlights a commitment to pioneering innovations that support sustainable solutions. It aims not only for a greener future in Saudi Arabia but also beyond its borders. The collaboration demonstrates dedication towards achieving national decarbonization goals through advanced technology.
The strategic alliance between KAUST, Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, and TMC marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy solutions in Saudi Arabia. By focusing on hydrogen fuel cell technology, this partnership contributes significantly towards reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.
