KAUST And NEOM Spearhead Global Coral Restoration, Aiming For 400,000 Corals Annually

In a significant stride towards marine conservation, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has joined forces with NEOM to initiate the first nursery under the KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI). This initiative stands as the world's largest coral restoration project, with its sights set on rejuvenating coral reefs globally. The inaugural nursery is now operational, with a second in development, both nestled along the Red Sea's shores.

KAUST, heralded as the top Arab University by Times Higher Education, spearheads this initiative. The nursery located on the NEOM coast in northwest Saudi Arabia is poised to revolutionize coral restoration efforts. It boasts a capacity to produce 40,000 corals annually, serving as a model for future large-scale restoration projects. The ultimate goal is to establish the world's largest and most advanced land-based coral nursery at the same site, aiming to nurture 400,000 corals each year. This ambitious project is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Global Coral Restoration Effort

Coral reefs, home to a quarter of known marine species yet occupying less than 1% of the ocean floor, are crucial for marine biodiversity. The alarming rate of mass bleaching events has sparked concern among scientists, predicting up to 90% of global coral reefs could suffer severe heat stress annually by 2050. In light of these challenges, initiatives like KCRI are vital for ocean health.

Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030's marine conservation goals, KCRI leverages KAUST's marine ecosystem research to explore innovative restoration methods. The initiative plans to deploy 2 million coral fragments on a 100-hectare site, marking a significant conservation effort. KAUST President Prof. Tony Chan emphasized the urgency of transitioning from labor-intensive restoration methods to industrial-scale processes to combat coral reef degradation.

NEOM's CEO, Nadhmi Al-Nasr, highlighted the initiative's role in demonstrating NEOM's commitment to sustainability and innovative environmental solutions. This collaboration between KAUST and NEOM aims not only to restore coral reefs but also to raise awareness about their importance for future generations.

This groundbreaking initiative not only aims at environmental restoration but also offers educational benefits, aligning with Vision 2030's broader strategic goals. For more details on this pioneering project, interested parties can visit KAUST's dedicated webpage.
