KAUST Launches First School-Based Mangrove Nursery To Empower Youth In Environmental Stewardship

The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has initiated the KAUST Mangrove Nursery, marking it as the first school-based mangrove nursery in the Middle East. This initiative, developed in collaboration with KAUST Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), The KAUST School (TKS), and KAUST Social Responsibility, aims to promote environmental stewardship among young learners while actively contributing to the conservation of Saudi Arabia’s coastal ecosystems.

Earlier this year, TKS launched the nursery with 1,000 seedlings. Students collected, planted, and nurtured mangrove propagules under HSE guidance. This hands-on approach transforms conservation into an engaging learning experience. The first generation of these nursery-grown mangroves is now ready for planting along the shoreline. Students, educators, and volunteers are collaborating to restore and protect the coastline.

KAUST Launches School-Based Mangrove Nursery

Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal resilience and align with Saudi Arabia’s environmental objectives under Vision 2030. They help prevent shoreline erosion, provide essential habitats for marine life, and serve as effective carbon sinks. The nursery supports the Saudi Green Initiative's goal to plant over 100 million mangroves.

Hani Bojer, Manager of KAUST Social Responsibility, highlighted that "the initiative directly reflects KAUST’s deep commitment to social responsibility and environmental awareness." Over 100 student volunteers from the local community are involved in this project alongside representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the Ministry of Education.

Biodiversity Specialist at HSE Marika Panagiotou emphasized that the nursery represents KAUST’s dedication to "connecting science, education, and community action." Engaging students in restoration activities nurtures "future environmental stewards" while fostering a shared sense of responsibility.

TKS Sustainability Coordinator Dwain MacIntosh noted that TKS is transitioning from focusing solely on sustainability to adopting regenerative practices. The project offers students "engaging, hands-on, real-world opportunities" to contribute not only to preservation but also to restoring Saudi Arabia’s coastline.

Community Involvement and Global Impact

This initiative demonstrates how local actions can have a lasting global impact. KAUST Social Responsibility collaborates with students from neighbouring communities outside KAUST to cultivate environmental awareness and promote a culture of sustainability. Such efforts align with KAUST's participation as the first Saudi university in the Nature Positive Universities Network.

By integrating educational initiatives with practical conservation efforts, KAUST is setting an example for how academic institutions can contribute significantly to environmental goals. This project not only benefits local ecosystems but also aligns with broader national objectives under Vision 2030.
