Saudi Arabia's KAUST Unveils Plans For First Regional Research Vessel, Thuwal II

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has announced the construction of Saudi Arabia's first regional research vessel, Thuwal II. This vessel will be the flagship of the nation's research fleet, supporting marine research missions, including those by mega projects and ministries. The vessel is being built by Freire Shipyards in Vigo, Spain, and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The Thuwal II research vessel will measure 50 meters in length, 12.8 meters in width, and have a draft depth of 3.6 meters. Designed for a lifespan of 30 years, it features a modular design that accommodates various experimental laboratories compatible with current and future marine technologies. This modularity allows for extensive exploration of the Red Sea.

KAUST Plans First Saudi Research Ship

In addition to its primary function as a research vessel, Thuwal II will support national emergency responses such as oil spills and maritime incidents in the Red Sea. The vessel will accommodate 30 people, including 12 crew members, leaving space for researchers. It can explore the deepest points of the Red Sea using remotely operated vehicles and autonomous underwater submarines for visual and acoustic surveys.

The planning for Thuwal II involved numerous stakeholders within Saudi Arabia, including mega projects, ministries, and universities specializing in oceanography and marine operations. Glosten, a U.S.-based company, designed the vessel and will continue providing off-site engineering support during its construction. Additionally, Maritime Survey International from Australia has been selected to represent KAUST on-site to oversee daily construction activities.

This new vessel aims to enhance marine research in Saudi Arabia by providing full access to the Red Sea's coastal waters and deep-sea areas. It will explore major scientific interests such as coral reefs, marine life, and geological formations. This initiative is expected to attract more international partners and encourage greater scientific collaboration.
