KAUST Establishes Centers Of Excellence To Advance Saudi Vision 2030 Objectives

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has introduced four new Centers of Excellence (CoEs) to enhance research in key national and international areas. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and supports KAUST’s Accelerating Impact strategy, which aims to solidify its status as a leader in applied science.

The Center of Excellence for Generative AI, led by professors Bernard Ghanem and Juergen Schmidhuber, will focus on developing versatile AI models tailored to the Kingdom's research, development, and innovation needs. This center aims to be at the forefront of Generative AI research, driving progress across various sectors.

KAUST's New Excellence Centers

Prof. Husam Al Shareef, an expert in battery technologies and material science, along with chemistry professor Zhiping Lai, will lead the Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Storage Technologies. This center is dedicated to advancing renewable energy and storage solutions, playing a crucial role in Saudi Arabia's transition to sustainable energy by "prototyping and commercializing innovations that enhance the Kingdom’s industrial competitiveness," according to the release.

The Center of Excellence for Sustainable Food Security will be led by Prof. Mark Tester, an expert in plant science and agriculture in arid environments. He will be joined by professors Brande Wulff, a leader in crop genetics, and Peiying Hong, an expert in environmental microbiology and wastewater treatment. This center aims to develop technology-driven agricultural solutions that improve resource efficiency, crop enhancement, and sustainable biosystems to bolster food security with minimal environmental impact.

Prof. Imed Gallouzi, an expert in RNA biology and mRNA processing, along with Professor Xin Gao, an expert in computational biology and AI, will head the Center of Excellence for Smart Health. This center focuses on creating digital and AI-driven technologies aimed at transforming healthcare through precision medicine. It promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and education to revolutionise Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system.

Strategic Alignment with National Priorities

These CoEs were established because they align closely with national priorities. They are interdisciplinary by nature and have the potential to generate significant economic and social impacts. According to the press release: "They will play a vital role in leading pioneering research, in line with KAUST’s Accelerating Impact strategy." The centers will integrate with KAUST’s National Transformation Institute to drive research excellence and innovation.

KAUST President Prof. Edward Byrne AC commented on the launch: "The establishment of these new Centers of Excellence exemplifies our commitment to pioneering scientific leadership and discovery. By focusing on AI, renewable energy, sustainable food security, and smart health, we are not only addressing the Kingdom’s most pressing challenges but also positioning KAUST as a global leader in these critical fields."

The Accelerating Impact strategy was initiated by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This strategy aims to align research efforts with national priorities while supporting economic diversification through impactful RDI projects.

The newly established CoEs are essential for KAUST’s objective of providing impactful solutions that support national economic goals. They aim to address issues related to health and wellness, sustainable environments, energy leadership, and future economies.

These initiatives reflect KAUST's dedication to scientific advancement while contributing significantly towards Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals.
