KAUST Highlights Universities' Essential Role In Driving Innovation At Times Higher Education Summit

During the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit 2025, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) emphasised the crucial role universities play in fostering innovation and economic growth. The summit, held for the first time in the Middle East at KAUST, also highlighted the importance of sustainability, cultural preservation, and global collaboration. This event brought together around 750 participants from 28 countries.

The summit's discussions centred on redefining universities' missions beyond education to becoming active agents of progress and innovation. Leaders from academia, industry, and policy-making sectors participated, including KAUST President Sir Edward Byrne and Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education. The event featured 105 keynote speakers from 75 institutions worldwide.

KAUST Emphasises Universities' Role in Innovation

Women made up 38% of the speakers at the summit. More than 90% of participants hailed from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, the Americas, and Asia. This diversity underscores both the regional significance and global impact of the summit. The event focused on international cooperation in advancing higher education and scientific research.

KAUST's strategic location on the Red Sea enhances its ability to influence global higher education trends through research partnerships worldwide. The university continues to shape future educational landscapes by addressing shared global challenges. It prepares future generations for a rapidly evolving world through adaptation and evolution strategies.

Hosting this summit aligns with KAUST’s mission-driven role in supporting Saudi Arabia’s priorities under Vision 2030. The focus areas include human health, environmental sustainability, leadership in energy and industry, and future economies. These priorities are integral to Saudi Arabia's research, development, and innovation goals.

The three-day summit reflected diversity, inclusivity, and a global character by bringing together leaders from various sectors worldwide. It explored how universities can adapt to address global challenges effectively while preparing future generations for a rapidly changing world.
