KAUST Solidifies Its AI Journey With Focus On Innovation And Education
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has positioned itself as a frontrunner in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) within Saudi Arabia and the broader region. This strategic move aligns with the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to enhance human capabilities and drive innovation through AI. KAUST's dedication is reflected in its state-of-the-art infrastructure, the expertise of its professionals, and its collaborations with key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors. By focusing on integrating AI into critical national sectors such as security, energy, data analytics, and healthcare, KAUST is making significant strides towards realizing these goals.
In a notable effort to bolster its AI expertise, KAUST launched a series of science and technology-based training programs through the KAUST Academy's "Continuing Education" initiative. Since its establishment in 2022, the Academy has successfully conducted six training programs and three summer camps. These initiatives have been in collaboration with 20 Saudi universities, reaching participants from 12 cities across the Kingdom. Impressively, women accounted for 70% of the attendees. By the close of 2022, around 2,000 students had benefited from these programs, under the guidance of renowned experts like Professor Jurgen Schmidhuber, often hailed as the "father of modern AI".

KAUST's commitment to leveraging AI for processing information swiftly, driving innovation, extracting valuable insights, and implementing effective skill development plans is evident. The establishment of the KAUST Academy as a tuition-free training platform highlights the institution's dedication to making education accessible to all citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia. KAUST is also keen on developing skills in areas that align with national priorities such as cybersecurity, bioinformatics, applied and computer sciences, business analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics.
At the 2022 Global AI Summit held in Riyadh, KAUST showcased its leading-edge projects in AI and deep neural networks (DNNs), underlining its pivotal role in advancing AI research and talent development within the Kingdom. Furthermore, through partnerships like the one with Oxford University, KAUST is enhancing its educational offerings. This collaboration enables students to delve into modern technologies' operations, building upon KAUST's successful track record of supporting over 800 students from various regions across the Kingdom.
Overall, KAUST's Artificial Intelligence Initiative is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary education and creating opportunities for both local and global engagement in AI innovation and education. This initiative not only supports Saudi Arabia's vision for the future but also places KAUST at the forefront of AI research and education on a global scale.
