Kasbat Al-Midmar: Discovering A 300-Year-Old Historical Legacy In Badr Al-Janoub

The ancient "Kasbat Al-Midmar" stands prominently in the historic district of Badr Al-Janoub Governorate. This area is dotted with remnants of traditional mud houses, serving as cultural and historical symbols. These structures, built over 300 years ago, reflect a rich heritage of fortresses and homes. The architectural style, known as the "Kasbah," features a circular design with a wide base that narrows upwards, resembling watchtowers.

Vice President of the Najran Society for History and Archaeology, Manea Naji Al Saad, highlighted several archaeological sites in Badr Al-Janoub Governorate. These include old mud houses and Qashla Castle on Mount Al-Qahrah. The castle provides panoramic views of the governorate's center from all directions. Nearby lies the "Kasbah," appearing as a tall circular tower among residential homes in the old district.

The Heritage Commission actively works to preserve traditional buildings and archaeological sites in the region. Their efforts include protecting, documenting, and registering these sites in the National Antiquities Register. They also oversee restoration and rehabilitation projects to maintain the Kingdom’s cultural legacy.

Al Saad mentioned that Badr Al-Janoub Governorate also features ancient carvings, inscriptions, and historic castles like Al-Thaghr Palace. This palace dates back to the First Saudi State and was built by order of Imam Saud bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammad in 1221 AH. It consists of four stories and a watchtower surrounded by a large stone wall with a deep central well.

Kasbat Al-Midmar is notable for its seven-story structure that overlooks both the village and valley. Recently restored under the Heritage Commission's supervision, it serves as a testament to traditional mudbrick architecture. Originally constructed as a watchtower, it played a crucial role in safeguarding nearby farmland.

The governorate is home to several significant sites beyond Kasbat Al-Midmar. These include various ancient carvings and inscriptions that add depth to its historical narrative. Such elements highlight the region's importance in preserving Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage.

Efforts to maintain these historical landmarks are ongoing, ensuring they remain integral parts of Saudi Arabia’s cultural tapestry for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
