KAFD Launches Innovative Monorail Project To Transform Urban Mobility In Riyadh

The King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD DMC) has signed a significant agreement with CRRC (Hong Kong) Co. Limited, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co. Ltd, and Hassan Allam Construction Saudi. This collaboration aims to introduce a monorail system at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh. This initiative is expected to transform urban mobility within the district by enhancing pedestrian movement.

Located in Riyadh, KAFD is a mixed-use development that integrates business and lifestyle elements. It covers 1.6 million square meters and includes 95 buildings across five asset classes. These feature Grade A office spaces, luxury residences, commercial areas, hospitality venues, and entertainment spots. The district is designed for easy navigation within 10 minutes.

KAFD Introduces New Monorail for Riyadh

The monorail project aligns with KAFD's vision of creating a smart city with eco-friendly transport solutions. It aims to reduce dependence on private vehicles by offering a sustainable and efficient alternative. The monorail will span 3.6 kilometers and operate driverless trains on autopilot, ensuring high safety standards.

This elevated system will include six trains running on a circular track with six strategically placed stations throughout the district. These stations will connect key locations such as office buildings, retail spaces, and leisure facilities. Additionally, the monorail will integrate seamlessly with the Riyadh Metro for improved citywide accessibility.

Stephen Thomas, Chief Operations Officer of KAFD DMC, highlighted the global shift in urban mobility: "Globally, urban mobility is undergoing a transformation, with the global public transportation market size projected to grow from $6.11 billion in 2024 to $28.89 billion by 2034, at a CAGR of 16.81% over the decade." He emphasized that this project enhances life quality for residents and visitors while supporting Riyadh's long-term sustainability goals.

The monorail can accommodate up to 3,500 passengers per hour during peak times. This capacity underscores KAFD's dedication to pioneering urban solutions that improve living standards while promoting environmental responsibility.

A Benchmark for Future Developments

KAFD has achieved WiredScore's Global Smart Neighborhood Certification due to its advanced digital infrastructure that supports connectivity and sustainability. It is the first neighbourhood in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to receive this recognition.

As a green district, KAFD boasts the world's largest LEED platinum-certified business destination. Its portfolio includes over 40 Silver and Gold LEED-certified buildings and features the world's first LEED Platinum v4-certified fire station.

Once operational, this monorail project will position KAFD as an exemplary model for future urban mobility developments worldwide. The initiative not only enhances connectivity within the district but also aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objectives.
