KACST Develops Advanced 5G Mobile Communications Network Using Open RAN Technology For Enhanced Security

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has successfully developed a 5G communications network using Open RAN technology. This network aims to provide secure communications in remote, industrial, and sensitive areas. The initiative is part of the National Laboratory's collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST).

The project aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to enhance local content in non-oil sectors and diversify the national economy. By integrating satellite systems and UAVs, the network supports direct, real-time voice and video communications. It also allows users to control features and applications with high speed and responsiveness.

KACST Builds Advanced 5G Network with Open RAN

This development will boost technological readiness in Saudi Arabia's next-generation communications sector. It is expected to support new startups and build national capabilities by training over 25 specialists in Open RAN technologies. By 2030, an estimated 45 million users will benefit from this network.

The adoption of Open RAN technologies will aid global efforts to diversify supply chains for communication infrastructure. It is projected to increase factory productivity by 25% and enhance the retail sector by nearly 15%. Additionally, it will reduce capital costs for network construction by about 50% and operational costs by around 35%.

The newly built network is developed by national expertise, enabling users to tailor its features according to their needs. This achievement contributes significantly to the growth of future communications technology markets in the Kingdom. It also creates numerous job opportunities as part of Saudi Vision 2030.

Open RAN technology plays a crucial role in supporting global supply chain diversification for communication networks. Its implementation is expected to drive economic growth by enhancing productivity across various sectors while reducing costs associated with network infrastructure development.
