Exploring Media's Impact On Refugee Support At Jusoor International Workshop
The Jusoor International Center for Media and Development organised an international workshop at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The event was titled "The Role of the Media in Supporting and Advocating for Refugee Issues". Specialists and researchers gathered to discuss how media can address the challenges faced by refugees, displaced individuals, and conflict victims through advocacy and development initiatives.
Mohamed Al Hammadi, President of Jusoor International for Media and Development; Prof Dr h.c. Mehmet Sükrü Güzel, Founder and President of the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies; and Patrick Taran, President of Global Migration Policy Associates, were among the notable participants. They shared insights on the media's role in refugee advocacy.

Al Hammadi highlighted that media's influence on refugee issues has grown significantly. He pointed out criticisms regarding how media platforms handle these topics. He noted that there are gaps in raising awareness in host countries about the need to protect and assist refugees.
Al Hammadi referred to reports from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) showing a rise in global refugee numbers. These individuals are either fleeing conflicts or enduring harsh economic conditions in their home nations. He stressed the importance of encouraging media outlets to focus more on these issues.
He also mentioned the increase in anti-refugee rhetoric on social media. This rhetoric often incites communities against refugees, sometimes labelling them as terrorists or economic burdens on host countries. Al Hammadi emphasised that media should play a positive role in countering such narratives.
Role of International Organisations
Al Hammadi underscored the crucial role of the United Nations and its refugee agency in supporting refugee issues. He stressed that efforts should start from countries sending refugees by addressing root causes driving people to seek refuge or migrate for better lives.
This can be achieved by supporting these countries to enhance their economies and development processes. By doing so, it may reduce the need for people to flee their homes.
The workshop aimed to explore effective methods for addressing these challenges through media advocacy efforts. Participants discussed various strategies to improve awareness and support for refugees globally.
The event provided a platform for experts to share knowledge and collaborate on solutions to improve conditions for refugees worldwide. It highlighted the importance of collective efforts in addressing refugee issues through media advocacy.
The discussions emphasised that media has a significant role in shaping public opinion about refugees. By providing accurate information, media can help foster understanding and support for refugees among host communities.
The workshop concluded with a call to action for media outlets to take a more active role in advocating for refugee rights. Participants agreed that increased media attention could lead to better support systems for refugees globally.
