Juniper Trees: Guardians Of Biodiversity In The Sarawat Mountains

The juniper tree, known as the "Lady of Trees," is a symbol of Saudi Arabia's lush forests and towering mountains. These ancient trees play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of terrestrial ecosystems. They provide essential habitats for wildlife in regions like Taif, Al-Baha, and Aseer.

Under the care of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, efforts are made to nurture junipers and protect natural resources. Preventing harmful practices and raising awareness, especially among tourists visiting Al-Hada and Al-Shafa villages in Makkah, is a priority.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, Director General of Research and Innovation at the center, highlighted the importance of juniper trees and the threats they face. He noted significant degradation in juniper environments in the southwestern highlands due to human activities and climate factors.

This degradation has led to dieback in junipers, evident in areas with lifeless trees. "Despite being a new entity, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification is actively involved in rehabilitation efforts," Al-Ghamdi stated. The center aims to address degradation causes and expand forest coverage with juniper trees.

Dr. Saleh Al-Shaeel, a botany enthusiast, remarked that juniper trees in the Sarawat Mountains represent the region's natural beauty and resilience. These evergreens support rich biodiversity and significantly influence the local climate.

Saudi Green Initiative

The Saudi Green Initiative aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom. This initiative aligns with efforts to rehabilitate degraded areas and expand forest coverage with junipers.
