Jubail Industrial City Implements World's Largest Integrated Smart Irrigation Network For Sustainability
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in various sectors due to its accuracy and speed, improving life quality and human interaction with the environment. Jubail Industrial City is a key player in this technological advancement, hosting one of the largest integrated smart irrigation systems globally. This system, managed by a central control hub, includes over 12,200 smart devices and processes around 1.2 million signals each day.
The smart irrigation system in Jubail aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals for environmental sustainability and digital transformation. It serves as a national model for efficient resource management and smart city activation. The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) oversees this initiative, which significantly contributes to these objectives.

Eng. Safar Alnutayfat, the RCJY Irrigation Network Operation and Maintenance Manager, highlighted the success of smart irrigation technologies in managing an extensive network of pipelines stretching over 11.6 thousand kilometers. This system has notably decreased operation and maintenance expenses by more than 35%. Additionally, it promotes sustainability by recycling treated water for irrigation at about 2.8 million cubic meters monthly.
This advanced system not only improves operational efficiency but also reduces costs significantly. It stands as one of Saudi Arabia's notable national achievements, aligning with the Saudi Green and Middle East Green Initiatives. The system focuses on rationalizing natural resource consumption, increasing vegetation cover, and enhancing climate change mitigation efforts in the region.
Eng. Alnutayfat emphasized that RCJY aims to strengthen partnerships with government bodies and sectors to share this successful model further. By doing so, they hope to expand its positive impact across other regions.
The integration of AI into such large-scale projects exemplifies how technology can drive sustainable development while supporting national initiatives aimed at environmental conservation and resource optimization.
