Jordan To Finalise Second Phase Of Electricity Link With Iraq By Early 2025

Jordan is on track to finalise the second phase of its electrical connection project with Iraq by early 2025, as stated in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' 2023 Annual Report.

The Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported that the project is advancing as planned, marking a crucial step in boosting regional energy collaboration. The report, published on Sunday, outlined ongoing civil and engineering tasks, including the provision of vital materials like circuit breakers, transformers, and related equipment. The construction of the 400 kV electrical transmission line is also progressing.

Electric Link Phase 2 by 2025

The second phase aims to supply electricity to Iraq's Al-Qa'im region. Upon completion, this connection will provide between 150 and 200 megawatts (MW) at 400 kV. This will be achieved by building a 330 kV transmission line and completing the 132/400 kV Al-Qa'im substation in Iraq and the 33/132/400 kV Al-Risha substation in Jordan.

The first phase of the Jordan-Iraq electrical connection became operational in early 2024. It involved supplying the Al-Rutbah region in Iraq with 40 MW at 132 kV after constructing a 150-kilometre transmission line on the Iraqi side.

The project's second phase includes significant milestones such as delivering essential materials and equipment. The implementation of a robust 400 kV electrical transmission line is underway. This phase focuses on enhancing energy cooperation between Jordan and Iraq, aiming to stabilise electricity supply in the region.

According to Petra, this project represents a significant milestone in regional energy cooperation. The timely progress underscores both countries' commitment to improving their energy infrastructure.

The Ministry's report highlights that civil and engineering work is ongoing, ensuring all necessary components are supplied. This includes circuit breakers, transformers, and other related equipment essential for the project's success.

This initiative not only strengthens Jordan's energy sector but also supports Iraq's efforts to stabilise its electricity supply. By connecting their grids, both nations aim to enhance energy security and foster economic growth through improved infrastructure.

As Jordan continues its efforts to complete this project by early 2025, it remains focused on meeting all deadlines and ensuring efficient execution. The successful completion of this project will mark a significant achievement in regional energy collaboration.
