Saudi Finance Minister And Global Leaders Discuss Syria's Economic Recovery Efforts At 2025 Meetings

Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Aljadaan, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga have issued a joint statement regarding Syria. They highlighted a high-level roundtable held during the 2025 WBG/IMF spring meetings in Washington. This event brought together Syrian authorities, finance ministers, and key stakeholders from multilateral and regional financial institutions.

The roundtable built upon previous discussions at various conferences, including those in Paris, AlUla, and Brussels. It served as a platform for Syrian authorities to showcase their ongoing efforts to stabilise and rebuild the nation. The focus is on reducing poverty and achieving sustainable economic development.

Global Leaders Address Syria's Economic Challenges

Participants acknowledged the pressing challenges facing Syria's economy. There was a collective commitment to support the country's recovery and development efforts. Priorities include addressing critical needs of the Syrian people, rebuilding institutions, developing capacities, implementing policy reforms, and crafting a national economic recovery strategy.

The IMF and World Bank Group were urged to play significant roles in supporting these efforts. Their involvement should align with their mandates while reflecting shareholder support. Coordination with multilateral and bilateral partners is essential for effective assistance.

Efforts to reintegrate Syria into the international community were welcomed. Unlocking resources to support policy initiatives, early recovery, reconstruction needs, private-sector development, and job creation are crucial steps forward.

Commitment to Governance and Transparency

The statement also emphasised support for strengthening governance in Syria. Increasing transparency is vital as effective institutions are built to serve the Syrian populace. The goal is to create institutions that deliver tangible benefits for the people.

Gratitude was extended to all participants for their valuable contributions. Their commitment supports Syrian authorities' efforts in rebuilding Syria and improving citizens' lives. The group looks forward to reconvening by October 2025 during the annual IMF and WBG meetings.

This future meeting aims to assess progress made and harmonise global efforts towards advancing Syria's economic recovery and prosperity.
