GCC And EU Joint Ministerial Meeting Affirms Strength Of Strategic Partnership Led By Jasem Albudaiwi

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General, Jasem Albudaiwi, highlighted the significance of the recent meeting between the GCC and the European Union. This gathering underscores the robust strategic partnership that has been nurtured over decades. The collaboration is rooted in mutual respect and shared interests, initiated by a cooperation agreement in 1988 and further solidified by their inaugural joint summit last year.

During the 29th Joint Ministerial Council meeting in Kuwait, Albudaiwi emphasised that this session was particularly noteworthy. It marked the first ministerial-level meeting since the initial Gulf-European Summit. "The GCC attaches exceptional importance to continuing the implementation of the summit's outcomes, which established a clear roadmap for more fruitful cooperation," he stated.

GCC and EU Strengthen Strategic Partnership

The secretary-general stressed the importance of translating summit aspirations into concrete actions. These efforts aim to enhance economic partnerships, trade, and investment exchanges. Additionally, they focus on expanding cooperation in energy and green transitions while developing political consultations and security cooperation. Addressing global challenges like climate change and resolving conflicts are also key priorities.

Albudaiwi expressed his desire to see practical measures implemented for a full visa exemption between the Schengen Area in the EU and GCC countries. Such a step would ease travel procedures, opening up broader opportunities for trade, investment, as well as academic, cultural, and tourism exchanges.

The GCC General Secretariat has put forward two proposals to their European counterparts. One involves organising an Energy Forum between both sides. The other suggests hosting a forum focused on digital economy and trade. This initiative would be coordinated with Cyprus, the upcoming European presidency, along with the GCC and Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO).

Albudaiwi hopes these initiatives will help achieve tangible results from this strategic alliance. He believes that strengthening ties between these regions will lead to significant benefits for both parties involved.

The secretary-general remains optimistic about achieving shared goals through continued collaboration with Europe. By fostering deeper connections across various sectors such as energy or digital trade forums proposed by GCC leaders recently; there is potential for substantial progress within this longstanding partnership.
