Joao Almeida Podiums In Vuelta España's First Mountain Test
Joao Almeida of UAE Team Emirates showcased his strength during the challenging summit finish of stage 4 at the Vuelta España. He secured 3rd place on Pico Villuercas, a stage featuring over 3,500 metres of climbing. Primoz Roglic (Red Bull Bora) claimed victory from the reduced group and took the race lead.
As the group approached the steeper slopes within the final 5km, Pavel Sivakov increased the pace at the front. This move forced a chase from behind, quickly reducing the group's size. Almeida maintained a steady rhythm to reach the front despite what he described as one of his hottest days on a bike.
Almeida expressed his thoughts on the day: "It was a very hot day, maybe one of the hottest days I’ve ever been on the bike. The team did a great job to help us stay cool with bottles and ice to keep the hydration up. Coming into the last climb, the team put me in the perfect position and we could start in the front. The climb was super hard and really steep. I found good legs and managed to finish 3rd on the stage. Let’s keep the ball rolling and aim to do even better."
UAE Team Emirates currently leads the overall team classification as they head into stage 5, which is mostly flat and spans from Fuente del Maestre to Sevilla (177km). This strong performance sets them up well for upcoming stages.
