Jeddah's Historic District Marks A Decade Of UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Jeddah Historic District's inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Ministry of Culture oversees a program dedicated to revitalising this district, preserving its cultural and urban heritage, and transforming it into a global heritage destination in line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.

The Jeddah Historic District covers an area of 2.5 square kilometres. It is renowned for its distinctive architectural elements, urban layout, and rich cultural heritage. Located on the Red Sea coast, it has served as a significant port for pilgrims travelling to Makkah since the seventh century.

The district has also been a crucial hub for global trade between Asia and Africa. This role has facilitated cultural and economic exchanges over centuries. The program highlights that the district includes more than 650 heritage buildings, five historical main markets, several historical mosques, and one historical school.

The inclusion of the Jeddah Historic District on the UNESCO World Heritage List was based on three key criteria. These criteria emphasise the region's importance in facilitating the exchange of human values over time or within a cultural sphere. They also recognise its status as an exemplary representation of a particular architectural style or technology reflecting significant stages in human history.

Additionally, these criteria acknowledge the district's association with living traditions, ideas, beliefs, and works of art and literature that hold exceptional global importance. This recognition underscores the district's unique contribution to world heritage.

The program continues its efforts to revive the district and preserve its cultural and urban heritage. By doing so, it aims to transform Jeddah Historic District into a global heritage destination that aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals.
